That was some blizzard we survived last week, along with the long-lasting, sub-freezing temperatures afterward. Since we are always closed on Mondays here at Rhoads Memorial Library, we missed the brunt of the storm as we stayed home.

The day after the blizzard, we opened one hour later at 10 a.m. Castro County Judge Gfeller alerted us and other county offices to follow the lead of Dimmitt ISD as far as a delayed opening time. So, if you wish to visit us during inclement weather, it would be wise to call us at 806-647-3532 to ensure we are open before you venture out into the elements.

We appreciate Scott Martin for shoveling and applying ice melt to our front sidewalk when we opened. We thank him for his help.

Now we turn to details about our upcoming book sale, which starts next week on Tuesday, Jan. 23, in our meeting room. Books ranging from Westerns to children’s books to who-dunits for adults will be on sale, as will books dealing with subjects such as World War II, the plight of the American Indian, and the U.S. military.

A nimiety (yes, I’ve been studying the thesaurus again, this time for a synonym for my overused word, plethora) of cookbooks are available, too. Several of them feature the recipes and techniques of famous chefs such as James Beard, Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, Paul Prudhomme, and Graham Kerr. Others contain recipes closer to home, provided by churches, businesses, and other organizations in our area.

Specialty cookbooks abound for vegetarians, Paleo dieters, people with diabetes or heart disease, and those needing guidance on preparing meals for one or two people. Cookbooks featuring Indian, Irish, Italian, Mexican, and Scottish cuisine are available, as well as those providing recipes highlighting chuckwagon fare and comfort food.

In the library proper, our display case is brimming with Precious Moments’ figurines provided by Rhonda George of Hart. The January displayer, unavailable for a photo, was represented by her daughter and granddaughter, Kellie and Eleanor O’Connor, respectively.

Newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include: -”Holmes, Marple, and Poe: The Greatest Crime-Solving Team of the Twenty-First Century” (a mystery) by James Patterson and Brian Sitts; -”The Night Island” (a paranormal thriller) by Jayne Ann Krentz; -”Lone Oaks Crossing” (romantic fiction: the New Americana series) by Janet Dailey.
