An exciting new activity will begin next Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, here at Rhoads Memorial Library. Designed for the young scientist(s) in your life, take-and-make kits featuring science experiments can be picked up here, free of charge.

The kits are the brainchild of Felice Acker, Castro County's agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. We will serve as the distribution point for new kits on the first Tuesday of each month, with plans to do so through May, 2022.

Participants in our summer reading club know Mrs. Acker from her Terrific Tuesday events and this year's take-and-make kits that were presented in lieu of in-person programming. Mrs. Acker solicited surveys from parents about the kits, in an effort to assess the popularity of the kits.

The surveys asked parents whether they would like to see kits provided for the remainder of the year on a monthly basis. A whopping 94% of respondents said yes, so here we are!

Mrs. Acker noted that these science-based kits are perfect for youngsters ages 3-10. Kits will be limited in number and should arrive here by 11 a.m. on each month's first Tuesday, so come see us! Remember we offer books to be checked out, too!

For the adults in our midst, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, remains the planned date for Dimmitt Book Club's first meeting of the club year. Tentatively (due to the uncertainty wrought by COVID-19) the event will commence at 2 p.m. that day in our meeting room.

Vicki Schoen, an author from Amarillo, is scheduled to be the club's guest speaker. Social distancing will be observed, masks are optional, and hand sanitizer will be offered.

Newly-released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include:

"Vortex" (an FBI thriller) by Catherine Coulter;

"The Noise" (a thriller) by James Patterson and J.D. Parker;

"Complications" (a novel) by Danielle Steel;

"Bloodless" (a Pendergast thriller) by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

As we have mentioned in earlier columns, we will be closed Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, for Labor Day weekend. We will re-open at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021.

Happy Labor Day weekend!
