September has arrived and, while autumn is not officially upon us until Sept. 22, we are gearing up for the season here at Rhoads Memorial Library. The fall decor is out, and our season-appropriate bulletin board encourages readers to 'leaf' through a good book.

Next Thursday, Sept. 8, will feature a meeting of the Diabetes Support Group from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Courtney Lowe, Health Agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, will lead the session in our meeting room. Anyone who has diabetes or supports someone who does is welcome to attend the free event.

Wednesday, Sept. 14, will feature the start of a new club year for Dimmitt Book Club. The group will meet at 2 p.m. that day, led by President Genell Craig. See next week's 'Library Lines' for exciting details about the program that will be held!

'Americans and the Holocaust' is the title of a traveling exhibition set to debut in Amarillo on Saturday, Sept. 17. The 1,100 square foot exhibit will be set up in the Amarillo Public Library's downtown facility at 413 S.E. 4th Avenue through Oct. 23.

This is a huge honor not only for our area but for the entire state. It was in the fall of 2019 when the American Library Association and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum selected 50 libraries (25 university libraries and 25 public libraries) out of over 250 applicants to host the event. The Amarillo Public Library is the only public library in the state of Texas among them.

The exhibition addresses important themes in American history, including Americans’ responses to refugees, war, and genocide in the 1930s and ‘40s. It challenges the commonly held assumptions that Americans knew little and did nothing about the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews as the Holocaust unfolded.

Admission is free to the public for the self-guided event. For more information or to arrange a tour, contact Cynthia Hunt, Amarillo Public Library Program Specialist, 806-378-6019 or cynthia.hunt@amarillo.gov.

Throughout this time, special speakers will be featured in the Heritage Room of the Amarillo Civic Center or other Amarillo locations. More information may be found at amarillolibrary.org/services/a mericans-and-the-holocaust.

It is this Saturday, Sept.3, when we will be closed for Labor Day weekend. We will re-open at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Until next week, Happy Reading!
