Bringing reliable electricity to rural residents in Castro and Deaf Smith counties was the subject presented by Steve Horrell when he spoke to Dimmitt Book Club at Rhoads Memorial Library. He highlighted interesting anecdotes featured in his book, '75 Years at Deaf Smith Electric Cooperative.'

Horrell also described the process of gathering information, meeting editor's deadlines, compiling facts and photos, on the way to getting the book published. A resident of Hereford, he recently retired after working at the co-op for more than 30 years.

The English as a Second Language class (ESL) being held on Thursday nights in our meeting room has expanded to include Tuesday nights. Gloria Hernandez teaches the class that is held from 7-9 p.m. on both nights.

Be sure and 'save the date' as they say for an open forum featuring candidates vying for the Castro County Judge's position. The event, hosted by The Castro County News, will begin at 7 p.m. at Dimmitt City Hall on Thursday, Oct. 27. Candidates Mandy Gfeller and Janet Sammann will be featured; they are both on the ballot for the Nov. 8 general election.

Speaking of the upcoming Nov. 8 election: early voting will begin Monday, Oct. 24 and end on Nov. 4. Early voting will be held in the Castro County Courthouse weekdays during that time.

As I mentioned in earlier 'Library Lines,' we are being inundated with newly released books since shipping issues have been resolved. Among the many books that have arrived and are ready for checkout, are: -'Suspect' (a thriller) by Scott Turow; -'The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas' (a novel) by James Patterson and Tad Safran; -'Next in Line' (a William Warwick novel) by Jeffrey Archer; -'Righteous Prey' (a Prey novel) by John Sandford; -'Home Sweet Christmas' (a novel) by Susan Mallery; -'Distant Thunder' (a Stone Barrington novel) by Stuart Woods; -'Long Shadows' (a Memory Man/Amos Decker novel) by David Baldacci.

Another new release is 'The Last Dreamwalker' by Rita Woods, which explores a gift (or curse?) that is passed down from generation to generation. After her mother's death, Layla Hurley learns from her aunts that a Gullah-Geechee island off the shore of South Carolina now belongs to her.

She discovers that the terrifying nightmares that have tainted her relationship with her family is a power passed down by her Gullah ancestors. Layla is a Dreamwalker, able to inhabit the dreams of others and manipulate them.

As Layla uncovers dark secrets about her family's past, she finds herself drawn into a potentially deadly, decades-old feud fought in the dark corridor of dreams. 'The Last Dreamwalker' is described as a 'gripping contemporary read about power and agency; family and legacy, and the ways trauma, secrets and magic take shape across generations.'

Until next week, Happy Reading!
