Livestock shows begin Jan. 13

It’s that time of year again for the 2021 Nazareth and Castro County Stock Shows, with all the FFA and 4-H showmen set and ready to show off their hard work and livestock projects.

The Nazareth Stock Show will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 13, with all classes and divisions held on the same day. No schedule has been re leased as of yet.

The Castro County Stock Show will be held Jan. 15-16.

Judges for the show this year are Rusty Tanner, steers and heifers, Brock Herren, barrows, and Brody Halfmann, lambs and goats.

The Heifer Show will kick things off on Jan. 14 at 3:30 p.m., followed by the Steer Show.

Steer classes will include three breed divisions for English, American and Exotic. Breed champions will compete for the Grand and Reserve Champion Steer awards. Weight classes and breed divisions will be at the superintendent’s discretion.

Breed divisions for the heifer classes will be American, English, Exotic and Dairy. Division champions will compete for Grand and Reserve Champion Heifer.

The Goat Show will get underway at 9 a.m. on Jan. 15, followed by the Lamb Show.

The Goat Show will include light weight and heavy weight divisions. Angora goats will be eligible to compete in their own division. Division and Reserve Division Champions will compete for Grand and Reserve Grand Champion awards.

Both wethers and ewe lambs will be eligible for the Lamb Show with the possibility of five breeds. Breeds will include Fine Wool (purebred grade Rambouillet or Delaine or a Cross between the two breeds; Fine Wool Cross (lambs sired by Suffolk, Hampshire, Corriedale or Columbia rams and out of fine wool ewes. Lambs that carry more than 50% medium wool breeding go into the medium wool class); Medium Wool (purebred or grade Hampshire, Suffolk or Corriedale and Columbia or other medium woolcross); Southdown (purebred Southdown or lambs that ex hibit predominant Southdown characteristics); and Dorper (must be a Dorper, White Dorper or a cross among these two breeds).

The Barrow Show will get started at 11 a.m. or no earlier than 30 minutes after the Goat Show.

The Swine Show is limited to barrows only. Divisions will include Berkshire, WOP, Duroc, Hampshire, Spot, Poland China, Yorkshire and Crosses and will be divided by weight at the discretion of the barrow superintendent. First and second place barrows will compete for Breed Champion and Reserve Champion and those will compete for Grand and Reserve Champion of the show.

The sale will be held on Jan. 16 beginning at 1 p.m.

A) Grand Champion heifer, barrow, lamb, goat and steer

B) Reserve Champion heifer, barrow, lamb, goat and steer

C) All Breed Champions

E) 1/3 Goat

F) 1/3 Steer or Heifers

G) 1/3 Barrows

H) 1/3 Lamb

Organizing and running the livestock show are Pammy Millican, general superintendent, Kenny Schulte, assistant superintendent, Dennis Underwood, steer superintendent, Evan Huseman, swine superintendent, Beau Bradley, sheep and goat superintendent, Carol Lundsford, sale committee chairman, Curtin Durbin, facilities committee chairman, Lori Johnson, finance committee chairman, and Krisse Bruton, awards committee chairman.

The Castro County Livestock Show Association board of directors includes Jason Wooten, president, David Bounds, vice president, Lyndy Nelson, secretary, Mark Kleman, treasurer, and members Rudy Monreal, Scott Huseman, Ware Brown, Todd Hatla and David Guerrero.
