Sheriff Sal Rivera presented his monthly report for January to the Commissioners Court last week.

Rivera said there were 55 calls with 19 citations, five arrests, and six warrants logged in by the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office seized 1.5 grams of methamphetamine, 0.3 grams of cocaine, and two dose units of dangerous drugs.

Overall, the Sheriff’s Communications Division reported 199 total calls, including the Sheriff’s Office. The Dimmitt Police Department had 98 calls; Texas DPS had six calls; fire departments, three calls; and EMS, 36 calls.

The Castro County jail had an average of 18 inmates throughout the month with 21 males and three females booked into the facility. There were two males being held on immigration detentions.

Out-of-county inmates being housed for other counties included:

Floyd County inmates for 165 days for $8,250 with reimbursement to be made for medication/TeleMed Mental Health Services for their inmates for $221; and Lamb County inmates for 43 days for $2,150.

Rivera said jail maintenance included changing AC/heat filters and maintenance on the Unit 12 heating unit by Mario’s Heating & Air.

Rivera also submitted his motor vehicle racial profiling information which included 41 stops, with 12 on city streets, 20 on US highways, and eight state highways. Race or ethnicity was not known prior to the stop.

The race/ethnicity broke down into 23 Hispanic/Latino; 17 white and one Black with eight females and 33 males. The majority of stops were for moving traffic violations (31); and vehicle traffic violations (8). Seven searches were done, four with consent. Contraband was discovered in two searches. 19 warnings were written and 18 citations. Three resulted in citation and arrest and were based on violation of Penal Code and violation of traffic law. No physical force resulting in bodily injury was used.

There have been no complaints of racial profiling.
