Several laws passed in the 2021 Texas legislative sessions laws took effect Jan. 1, including a revision to how property taxes are collected, an expansion of the judicial branch and an amendment to pollution standards.

Ag producers lack confidence in 2023 farm income

Strong harvest-time commodity prices pushed farmer confidence to its highest level in 16 months, said a Purdue University poll of large operators released on Tuesday. The abrupt 24-point climb in the Ag Economy Barometer “was motivated by producers’ stronger perception of current financial conditions on their farms,” said agricultural economists James Mintert and Michael Langemeier.

Gfeller sworn in as County Judge

The New Year saw Mandy Gfeller being sworn as the new Castro County judge and eager to take up her duties as a local public servant representing the citizens. Gfeller entered the primaries as a Republican challenger to incumbent Carroll Gerber and ran a strong campaign and won that bid.

December state sales tax revenue $3.93B

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reported Tuesday that state sales tax revenue totaled $3.93 billion in December, 10.5 percent more than in December 2021. The majority of December sales tax revenue is based on sales made in November and remitted to the agency in December.

TFB critical of revised WOTUS rule

The Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers on Friday announced a new definition of “waters of the United States,” a classification that has been debated for decades. The new definition announced this week instates similar protections to those that were in place before 2015, while also clarifying certain qualifications for protected waters.

HPWD begins water measurements

High Plains Underground Water Conservation District (HPWD) field technicians are now making annual water level measurements. Water level measurements are beginning in Castro County, as well as Deaf Smith and Parmer counties beginning on Jan.
