Abbott appointed to FEMA Review Council

Governor Greg Abbott was sworn into the bi-partisan Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Review Council and participated virtually in the first public meeting of the Council to discuss the future of FEMA and its emergency response capabilities.

Texas Lottery Commission to be abolished

The Texas Legislature has cleared the way for Texas Lottery to continue under theTexas’ Department of Licensing and Regulation, effectively abolishing the Texas Lottery Commission, as well as including new restrictions on how players can buy tickets.

CCCHA to host free fishing day

Castro County Hispanic Heritage Association of Dimmitt will be hosting “Fishing Day at the Bay on June 7.The free event will be held at Dimmitt Lake at Sheffy Park from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature fishing, prizes for the largest fish caught, food and lots of fun for all ages.

Legislature approves education funding bill

South Plains College in Levelland announced the students making the president’s and dean’s list for the spring semester, five of which were from Castro County.Justice Velasquez of Dimmitt was among 400 students named to the president’s list. To qualify, students must earn a GPA of 4.

Cruz, Cornyn introduce bill to reimburse Texas

U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn from Texas introduced legislation to reimburse the State of Texas for the more than $11 billion dollars Texas taxpayers spent on Operation Lone Star, Texas’ border security mission launched due to President Biden’s dereliction of duty.

Medrano graduates from UT

Luigi Medrano, of Dimmitt, graduated with a Bachelor Of Science In Electrical And Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in spring 2025.Medrano was one of nearly 9,500 students who received an undergraduate, master’s or doctoral degree.
