Joy was born on July 17, 1932 in Erick, Oklahoma to Jack and LaWanda Lamm and grew up in western Oklahoma, graduating from Sayre High School. Joy married Elvis Arnold Barker on June 10, 1950 and was a loving wife for 65 years. Together they had two daughters, Sharon and Pam, who could have known no better mother. Joy and Elvis lived in Fort Worth and Borger before moving to Dimmitt, Texas in 1964. Soon after moving to Dimmitt, Joy became the office manager of the Castro County News, a position she held until retirement.

Through the years, Joy enjoyed sewing and crocheting, and making afghans for many. She was a loving mother and wife, feeling family was of utmost importance. All of her family felt her love and support throughout the years. Joy was a support to her parents and extended family, and they knew she would do anything for them. Her love for her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren was evident to all and she tried to be present in heart and in person at many of their milestones. Joy lived in Dimmitt until September 2019, when she became a resident of Raider Ranch in Lubbock, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Elvis; her parents, Jack and Lawanda Lamm; and her siblings, Bob, Jackie, Donna, and Gary. Surviving her are her two daughters, Sharon Barker of Lubbock, and Pam Crookham and her husband, James, of Georgetown, Texas; her grandchildren: Christopher Crookham and wife Becky, of Madison, Wisconsin, Jason Crookham of Katy, Texas, Jennifer McCulley and husband James, of Liberty Hill, Texas, and Jonathan Crookham and wife Bethany of Chicago, Illinois. She also leaves behind five greatgrandchildren, Samuel, Elliott, and Annabelle Crookham and William and Clara McCulley.
