Gerald “Sonny” Thomas, 77, long time Dimmitt resident passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021 in Lubbock. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Jonathan Sullivan and Pastor Bobby Campbell officiating. Burial will be held at Rosehill Cemetery in Tulia at 2 p.m. under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Viewing will begin Monday, Jan. 25, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Sonny was born March 25, 1943 to Albert Lee and Opal Lee (Stephens) Thomas in Lamesa, Texas. He moved to Dimmitt in 1959 and later married his wife Alene on Dec. 9, 1962. Sonny enjoyed restoring old vehicles and would volunteer at the high school after hours to help the kids in automotive class. He liked hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family, and took great pride when his children worked with him. Sonny enjoyed life and lived a good life.
Sonny is survived by his wife Alene Thomas of Dimmitt; two sons, Jerry Thomas of Dimmitt, and Jimmy Thomas of Wellington; one daughter-in-law, Pamela Harkins and husband Derik of Hereford; six grandchildren, Curtis Thomas and wife Amanda, Dustin Thomas and wife Reba, Devon Harkins, Mitchell Thomas, Carle Kemp and husband Kollin, and Kristen Harkins; two brothers, Lloyd Thomas and wife Sandra of Hereford, and Charles Thomas and wife LaDonna of Elk City, Oklahoma; and one sister, Juana Lou Pippins of Joplin, Missouri.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jackie Thomas; one grandson, Michael George; and one brother, Michael Thomas.
