Owen K. (Pete) Stewart, 91 of Dimmitt, Texas, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2022, in Dimmitt. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Jonathan Sullivan officiating. Graveside Service will be held at 4 p.m. in Snyder Cemetery in Snyder, Texas. The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday, May 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home located at 809 Butler Blvd., Dimmitt, Texas.
Owen K. (Pete) Stewart was born on May 22, 1930, in Hitchcock, Oklahoma to Harold M. Stewart and Sarah Rebecca (Sheridan) Stewart. Pete grew up on a farm and worked with family and neighbors including wheat harvest as a teenager. He graduated from Ringwood High School in 1948 and then attended Oklahoma A&M University for two years. On September 6, 1950, he joined the United Air Force and served at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and later in Korea with the Air Intelligence Service Group. While serving in the Air Force, Pete received the National Defense Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in December 1953. He began working for Natural Gas Company in 1954 and then transferred to the Sulfur Plant in Lehman in 1964 and then to Dimmitt in 1967. After his retirement in the late 1990s, he was a consultant for Goodpasture, Inc. now known as Dimmitt Sulfur. Pete married Darla Brotherton on Nov. 18, 1966, in Morton, Texas. Before joining the First Baptist Church, he was a faithful member of Lee Street Baptist Church for over 40 years serving as Sunday School teacher, treasurer and various committees.
Pete enjoyed traveling in an RV, gardening and many do-it-yourself projects, raising cattle, goats, sheep, chickens, guineas, honeybees and fruit and nut trees. He was a very loving and generous man and was always ready to help anyone in need.
Survivors include his wife, Darla Stewart of Dimmitt, Texas; daughter, Pam Rowe and husband Bill of Plains, Texas; son, Brian Stewart and wife Jill of Brenham, Texas; along with four granddaughters, Lyndi Morton and husband Jared of Panhandle, Texas, Lesli Marcee and husband John of Ovalo, Texas, Allison Stewart of College Station, Texas and Paige Stewart of Brenham, Texas; great-grandson, Knox Marcee of Ovalo, Texas; brother, Billy Stewart of California; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Janet Stewart; along with four brothers and two sisters.
