Arrangements and services have been entrusted to Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt, Texas. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Tom was born on Aug. 4, 1928, in Hart, Texas, to Roy and Mamie (Gallatin) McLain. He has been a lifelong resident of Hart, Texas, other than about four years of moving to Oklahoma for a short while. Tom married the love of his life Laverne Davis on December 31, 1949, in Clovis, New Mexico. Tom was a farmer and rancher for many years, he was a custom harvester, and he owned and operated Tom McLain Dirt Equipment for several years. Still, his most recent job was being a proud County Commissioner for Castro County for three terms. Tom also played bluegrass music and rodeoed in his younger days with his brothers and the Mayfield boys. He had many attributes, but his grandchildren were his most prized possessions and joy in life. Tom enjoyed traveling to Pagosa Springs with his grandchildren, working, and could just about fix or build anything that was asked of him. Tom was a member of the Church of Christ of Hart, Texas. Tom’s presence and laughter will be missed by many.
Those left to cherish his memories are his children, Tommy McLain and his wife Vivian of Canyon, Texas, and Janet K. McLain Truelock and her husband Ronnie of Alva, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Robyn Rhoades and her husband Ryan of Amarillo, Texas, Hayley Rheams and her husband Matthew of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Derek McLain and his wife Angie and Jeran McLain and his wife Amanda, all of Amarillo, Texas; 10 great-grandchildren, McKenzie Rhoades of Lubbock, Texas, Michael Rhoades and his wife Esperanza of Amarillo, Halle, Tristan and Kenton Rheams all of Bartlesville, and Breanna, Callie, Alyssa, Addison and Daxton McLain all of Amarillo; three sisters-inlaw, Midge McLain of Hart, Ruth McLain of McLean, Texas, and Edna Kittrell of Levelland, Texas; and a brother-in-law, R.L. Benson of Brownwood, Texas.
Tom will be joining his parents, his wife, Laverne McLain, and his siblings, Jack McLain, Hubert McLain, Willie Cox, Anna Whitcamp, R.D. McLain, Alpha “Mac” McLain, and Jo Laverne Mayfield Butler in heaven.
