Matias S. Hernandez passed away at the age of 81 on Thursday, July 18, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon John Nino officiating. A Visitation will be on Monday, July 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 6p.m. followed by a Vigil at the funeral home. Cremation and Funeral Services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford.

Matias was born in Corpus Christi, Texas to his parents, Melchor Avila Hernandez and Angelita (Sandoval) Hernandez on Feb. 24, 1943. He was a longtime resident of Easter, Texas and moved to Easter from Corpus Christi and started school in Dimmitt, where he met the love of his life Juanita O’Balle. He immediately fell in love with Juanita and asked for her hand in marriage and they became one on Sept. 9, 1963, in Littlefi eld, Texas. They created a beautiful, loving family and made Easter their home.

Matias started working at the age of 13 years old, as a farm laborer. He worked 40 years for the Frye family and developed a great work ethic and self-discipline. He worked from sunup to sundown and always came home to a home cooked meal prepared by his loving wife Juanita. One meal every day the entire Hernandez family sat together at the dinner table and had a meal together. Matias worked extremely hard to not only support his family but support his siblings.

Matias enjoyed listening to music, specifically Ramon Ayala, enjoyed eating barbeque and watching old western movies. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, and if they spent enough time with grandpa, he would put them to work, instilling his hard work ethic in them. He loved John Deere tractors; he enjoyed going pheasant hunting and being outdoors. He never met a stranger and was known by many.

Those left to carry on his legacy is his loving wife of 61 years of marriage, Juanita Hernandez of Amarillo; his children, MaryAnn Jimenez and her husband Manuel of Olton, Texas, Linda Lopez and her husband Joel, Gloria Bugarin and her husband Engelbert all of Amarillo, Rebecca Martinez and her husband Steven Reyes of San Antonio, Texas, Matias Hernandez Jr.and his wife Darlene of Hereford; his grandchildren, Anthony, Eric, Javier, Marissa, Matthew, Shelby, Baldemar, Rene, Manuel, Angel, Andrew, Sophia, Teresa, Chrystal, Joelda, Joel, Johnathan; one great-greatgranddaughter Emaryee Flores; his siblings, Maria Trevino of Waxahachie, Texas, Melchor Hernandez, Jr., and his wife Zoila of Amarillo, Manuela Nunez of Pasadena, Texas, Angelita Hernandez, Enedelia Vidal, Irma Rivera and her husband Jose all of Dimmitt, Texas, Andrea De La Cruz and her husband Jake of Canyon, Texas, Joe Hernandez and his wife Juanita of Odessa, Texas, Miguel Hernandez of Weatherford, Texas, and Tomas Hernandez and his wife Patricia of Midland, Texas.

Those preceding him in passing are his parents, Melchor Avila Hernandez and Angelita Sandoval Hernandez; his brother, Mario Hernandez; his grandson Marcus Jimenez; and his one great-grandson Damon Urbieta.
