Curtis was born on April 26, 1961, in Tulia, Texas, to Harry and Ida (Brandt) Birkenfeld. He grew up on the family dairy farm northeast of Nazareth and graduated from Nazareth High School in 1979. He attended TSTI in Amarillo, became a certified welder, and was employed by Crall Products in Pampa from 1980 – 1986. He was then employed by CHS Inc. in Dimmitt. Curtis was a lifelong member of Holy Family Catholic Church where he was currently serving as a Parish Council member.

The most important treasures of Curtis’life were his 17 nieces and nephews and 23 great-nieces and nephews. He loved and cherished each of them, and they esteemed him greatly. For a man who never had children, he is leaving a large legacy through time spent with them.
