Nicolas “Nick” Cortez, son of Esteban Cortez and Maria Luisa Cortez, was born in San Francisco De Los Toros, Guadalcazar SLP, Mexico on Sept. 10, 1956, and departed this life on Aug. 11, 2023, in Dimmitt, Texas, at the age of 66 years.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with the Rev. David Contreras, Deacon Paul Herrera, and Deacon John Nino as celebrants. Burial will follow in Hart Cemetery under the care of Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, with a vigil to follow at the church.

Nick moved to Hart, Texas in 1975 where he started working for S.R. Hutto and was employed by the Hutto family for 39 years. Shortly after arriving in Hart, Nick met the love of his life, Mary Tenorio Cortez and they were married on Dec. 23, 1976.

Nick loved being outside taking care of his yard and garden, enjoyed watching wrestling with the love of his life and his son, Joey, and he was known to pull a prank on everyone. Nick just loved being surrounded by family and seeing everyone happy. Hewasverywellknown by so many, and it didn’t matter who you were, if you needed help, he was always willing to lend a hand in any way. Nick will be extremely missed by everyone.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Mary Cortez of Hart; son, Francisco Cortez and wife Stephanie of Hart; son, Joey Cortez of Hart; daughter, Melissa Ramirez and husband Raymond of Plainview; son, Juan Amaya and wife Esmeralda of Plainview; and son Gavino Amaya and wife Mary Lou of Hereford; 27 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; siblings, Eulogio Cortez Rodriguez, J. Ines Cortez Rodriguez, Francisco Cortez Rodriguez, and Felix Garcia all of Cerritos, SLP, Mexico, Eusebia Cortes Rodriguez of Matamoros, Tamalupas, Mexico, and Narcisa Cortes of Santa Rosa, Texas.

Nick is preceded in death by his parents, Esteban and Maria Luisa Cortez; and daughter, Esmeralda Rodriguez.
