Maria I. Lara, of Dimmitt, Texas passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023, in Dimmitt at the age of 89 years.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father David Contreras, Deacon John Nino, and Deacon Richard Martinez as celebrants. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the care of Colonial Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited on Thursday, June 1, at 5 p.m. in the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home.

Maria I. Lara was born on Jan. 2, 1934, in Durango, Mexico to Jose Luis Unzueta and Matilda (Mireles) Unzueta. Maria moved to Dimmitt in the 1960’s where she raised her children and was a homemaker for her family. Maria was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and member of the Guadalupanas in Dimmitt. Maria loved to cook for her family, play bingo, work on crossword puzzles, and sewing. But most of all she loved her family and loved taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left behind to cherish her memories are her two daughters, Olga Acevedo and husband Luis of Dimmitt, and Rosa Aguirre and husband Pablo of Denton; one stepson, Manuel Lara and wife Diana of Tracy, California; four grandchildren, Vanessa Acevedo Smith and husband Casey, Amanda Acevedo, Clarissa Acevedo and Jerry Aguirre and wife Krystle; three great-grandchildren, Ashton Acevedo Smith and fiancé Martha Saenz, Kaisynn Acevedo Smith, and Jaggher Acevedo Smith.

Maria is preceded in death by her husband, Jose Lara; two brothers, Manuel Unzueta and Andres Unzueta; and one sister, Maria E. Zamora.
