Mary Johnson 1941-2026

Mary Johnson, 84, formerly of Hereford, TX passed away on February 20, 2026 in Canyon, TX. Mary Geneva Dufur was born in Caddo, OK on October 19, 1941 to Opal (Cole) and Sherman Dufur. She was the youngest of five children along with her four older brothers (JW, Haskell, Willis and Bill Dufur).

Mary was raised in Hereford, TX and graduated from Hereford High School in 1960. She attended one year of college at WT College in Canyon. On November 24, 1962, Mary married the love of her life, Wayne Johnson. They lived north of Friona where they farmed, ranched and raised their son, Trent Johnson. Mary loved to read and cook. In fact, she would feed anyone Wayne drug through the door, welcomed them with a hot meal and kind word. She was known for her chicken fried steak, pan fried potatoes, and chocolate cake.

In 1982, they moved to Hereford. Mary worked for many years as an office receptionist and medical billing specialist for Dr. Mims, Dr. Johnson, and Dr. Clarke; however, Mary would tell you the best job she ever had was being Grandma to Justin and Jarrett. She loved going to their school programs, being in the stands watching soccer/ football/ baseball, listening to the choir or band, and cheering them on in whatever they were involved in.

Mary loved the Hereford community and was involved in the Red Hatters Club and was the president of the Hereford Study Club for several years. She never knew a stranger and loved to visit with others and hear about what was happening in their lives and with their family. Mary had a weekly standing hair appointment and you never scheduled anything around that day or time. Her hair was always fixed beautifully with many thanks to Joyce and Debbie. A sense of community is what Mary had when she went to live at the Sky West Assisted Living in Canyon in 2024. She loved visiting with staff & residents, being involved in the activities, and doing the various art projects.

She was proceeded in death by her husband of 60 years, Wayne Johnson; her parents Opal andSherman Dufur; brothers JW Dufur and Haskell Dufur and her best friend since second grade, Kaye Scott Pagett.

Mary is survived by her son Trent Johnson and wife Keila of Canyon, TX; 2 grandsons, Justin of Lincoln, NE and Jarrett of Canyon, TX; 2 brothers Willis Dufur of Amarillo, TX and Bill Dufur of Denton, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to BSA staff, BSA Hospice, and to all the staff at Sky West. We appreciate the care that was provided and kindness that was shown.
