Estella Mendez, daughter of Matias Garcia and Antonia (Perez) Garcia, was born in Beeville, Texas on May 3, 1936, and departed this life Oct. 29, 2022, in Dimmitt, Texas, at the age of 86 years surrounded by many loving family members by her side. Estella was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who fought a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Lupe Mayorga, Deacon John Nino and Deacon Richard Martinez as celebrants. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the care of Colonial Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. at the church When Estella was younger, her favorite activities were singing, winning dance competitions with her older brother John and spending time with family. She attended prayer group regularly and developed her skills as a group leader.

In 1960, Estella met Silviano R. Mendez, a match truly made in heaven. They married on Dec. 29, 1962, and went on to have five children, Silviano Jr., Stella, Samuel, Suzanna and Lupe.

Estella was so very passionate about sharing the love and teachings of our Lord with others. She was an integral part of the Immaculate Conception Church. She was an avid member of the Guadalupanas, she also participated and led in the Cursillistas at the Dioceses of Amarillo. As loyal servant to God, Estella spent many hours dedicating her life to Him and the service of others and yet never failed in being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and educator. She worked for the Dimmitt ISD for 30 years. She was a Castro County election poll worker and volunteered for countless organizations in Dimmitt and surrounding communities.

Now that Estella has passed into the arms of our Lord, we should remind ourselves that while this is the end of her physical life on Earth, it’s the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for her.

Estella joins her parents, Matias and Antonia Garcia; daughter, Lupe Mendez Thurman; brother, Juan P. Garcia; and sister, Paula G. Espinoza in heaven.

She is survived by many loving family members, including her husband, Silviano Mendez of Dimmitt; sons, Silviano Mendez Jr. and wife Roseann of Round Rock, Texas, and Samuel Mendez and wife Jacquette of Amarillo, Texas; daughters, Stella Legando and husband Anthony of Cypress, Texas and Suzanna Lee and husband Clifford of Lago Vista, Texas; along with her many nephews and nieces.
