Ricky Wayne Mitchell, son of Howard (Buck) and Helen Mitchell was born Sept. 2 1951 in Sulphur Springs. They moved to Claytonville, Texas to farm with the Bevill family when Ricky was 1 years old, then moved to Hart shortly after. Ricky attended school in Hart where he played football and showed hogs, then graduated in 1970 and went on to graduate from West Texas State University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business.
Ricky met the love of his life Janet Wylie at the age of 17 and they were married in January 1974. Soon after, they graduated college and returned to farm in Hart where they lived and worked until 2010. Ricky studied hard to bring new innovative methods to farming. He served on many boards in Castro County, School, Elevator, Co-Op Gin, and was very active with Lions Club. He also served as elder of the 4th & Bedford Church of Christ in Dimmitt where he and Janet were members for many years. Ricky loved traveling, planning the next trip, playing in the stock market, and talking about anything farming. Ricky and Janet traveled to around 20 countries. He was an excellent businessman. He loved playing with children and buying tiny tiaras for his favorite little girls.
When Ricky moved to Lubbock, they were able to build a new home that was a replica of Janet’s great grandad’s from the late 1800’s. It was a treasure to build. History and family have forever been a benchmark to the success of his family.
In 1977, they began the family that he treasured starting with Lyndy Rae, followed by Mark Ryan in 1979, and the final edition, Whitney Rose in 1984. As Ricky and Janet got closer to retirement, they started traveling and found their passion. They have spent the better part of 15 years traveling the globe with family and excellent friends. Their family grew with the addition of their six grandchildren, Brody and Brock Nelson, Weston and Emery Mitchell, Ava and Wylie McEvers.
Ricky is survived by his wife Janet Mitchell; his children, Lyndy and Jason Nelson of Dimmitt Texas, Mark and Kim Mitchell of Shallowater, Texas, and Whitney and Trent McEvers of Canyon, Texas; his brother, James and wife Phillis Mitchell of Weatherford, Texas; as well as numerous cousins, three aunts and three uncles.
