Lucy was born in Hereford, Texas, to Martin Lorenzo Simpson and Virginia Naomi (Hunter) Simpson on October 29, 1936. She grew up between Dimmitt and Hereford on a dairy farm and graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1955. She married Joe Edward Nelson in 1957. After marriage, Lucy worked at First State Bank in Dimmitt before becoming a full-time homemaker and mother to 3 children. Lucy was a fabulous cook; she took particular pride in baking and loved most to share her delicious desserts with her family. A loving mother and wife, Lucy took exceptional care of her children, and of her husband during his lengthy, ultimately terminal illness. Lucy missed Joe every day and looked forward to reuniting with him. Later in life, Lucy returned to work as a teller at First United Bank of Dimmitt, where she enjoyed connecting with fellow Dimmitt residents for many years. Upon retiring, Lucy joined her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren in Granbury, Texas, and thereafter in College Station, Texas. For years, she spent endless hours with her four grandchildren playing board games, reading books, and attending their sporting events. In her spare time, Lucy was an avid bridge player and also enjoyed traveling with family and friends as frequently as possible — she was always ready for the next adventure. The family extends its gratitude to Country View Living, especially Olafay Sherman, for the excellent care she received. Lucy truly enjoyed her last year and a half being back home close to family and friends.

Those left to cherish memories of Lucy are her three children, Kelly Nelson of Canyon, Texas, Doug Nelson and wife Mary of Argyle, Texas, and Karen Griffin and husband Cleet of Bryan, Texas, four grandchildren, Reese Griffin of Huntsville, Alabama, Blake Griffin of Austin, Texas, Claire Griffin of Bryan, Texas, and Emma Nelson of Argyle, Texas along with many nieces and nephews.

Louise is preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe Edward Nelson, brother M.L. Simpson Jr., sister, Margaret Adams, sister, Virginia Hartman, brother, Bill Simpson and brother, Bob Simpson.
