Dorothy Maye Sheffy, 96 of Dimmitt, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, in Dimmitt, surrounded by her family. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 4, at 1 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Dr. Jonathan Sullivan officiating. Private burial will be held at Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the care of Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, March 3, from 5 to 7 p.m.at the funeral home.

Dorothy Maye (Smothermon) Sheffy was born on Oct. 25, 1925, in Prairie Hill, Oklahoma to Thomas Samuel Smothermon and Vassie (Cantrell) Smothermon. Dorothy graduated from Victory High School in Victory, Oklahoma and then married Rex Sheffy on Aug. 3, 1961, in Childress. She had been a longtime resident of Dimmitt since 1961. Dorothy worked for Boeing out of high school during WWII and then became employed by the Dimmitt Independent School District for 25 years up until her retirement. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Dimmitt in 1961 in which she was very active; she was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and was also very involved with Helping Hands. Dorothy loved to sew, gardening, cooking for her family, drinking coffee on the front porch, but most of all she loved chasing and spending time with all her grandchildren and being a mother to all.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Driscilla Storrs and husband Robert of Lubbock, Texas,, Donna Stafford and husband Tommy of Henderson, Nevada, Scott Sheffy and wife Shawn of Dimmitt, and Brett Sheffy of Lockney, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Rex Sheffy; along with five brothers and four sisters.
