Frances J. Smith, 86, longtime resident of Dimmitt, Texas, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas.

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Dimmitt with Dr. Jonathan Sullivan officiating, with arrangements being under the care of Colonial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Frances J. Smith was born to Homer Thomas and Luella (Higgins) Thomas on April 8, 1938, in Hereford, Texas.

Frances grew up in Hereford and graduated from Hereford High School. Shortly after graduating high school, she married Elbert Smith of Dimmitt on November 27, 1959. They lived and farmed in the Bethel community for several years where Frances raised her family and helped with the farm. They eventually moved into town to Dimmitt in 1997.

Frances had a strong faith and was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church of Dimmitt where she taught Sunday School and served on several different committees through the years. She and Elbert were both a vital part in helping with the new First Baptist Church located on Western Circle Drive.

Frances was a founding member of Helping Hands and a member of the Bethel Home Demonstration. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and working with ceramics. She will best be remembered for the love she had for her family.

Those left behind to cherish her memories are her two sons, Dwayne Smith and wife Shelly of Dimmitt, Tommy Smith and wife Sharon of Cochise, Arizona; one daughter, Denise Grusing and husband Chad of Canyon, Texas; one brother, Glenn Thomas and wife Mozelle of Amarillo, Texas; brother-inlaw, Jackie Heath of Montezuma, Kansas; sister-in-law, Gloria Thomas of Georgetown, Texas; six grandchildren, Brandy Kleman and husband Justin, Keshia Higgins and husband Drew, Kelsi Suprenant and husband Jayce, Audrey Bye and husband Colton, Macy George and husband Gentry, and Dylan Grusing; along with 10 greatgrandchildren.

Frances is preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Smith,;sister, Sue Heath,;brother, Charlie Thomas; and grandson, Tylar Smith.
