Virginia Self 1939-2026

Virginia Self, 86, of Hereford, Texas passed away on Friday, May 29, 2026, in Amarillo. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Friday, June 5, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Frio Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Arrangements and Cremation Services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford.

Virginia “Ginny” was born on November 25, 1939, in Watonga, Oklahoma to Kenneth and Inez (Sykes) Cox. She graduated from Hereford High School in 1958 and married her high school sweetheart Charles Self on February 22, 1959, at Frio Baptist Church. They shared 60 beautiful years of marriage before his passing in April of 2019.

Virginia worked for Holly Sugar weighing trucks, served as a teacher’s aide for the Friona school district and at Bluebonnet Elementary in Hereford, and worked as an office manager for both Bradford Trucking and Purina Mills.

She was a devoted member of Frio Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, GA leader, church camp leader, and in many other serving roles including Clowns under Construction as “Litt’l Bit”. She enjoyed reading, sewing, playing games, cards, dominos and going to Possum Kingdom Lake. Virginia had a true servant’s heart, always seeing opportunities to help, give, or feed others. She loved children and time spent with her family.

Those left to cherish her memories are her son Brent Self and wife Sharon of Dimmitt, Texas; two daughters, Jenness Rogers and husband Russell of Harper, Texas, and Tori Self of Amarillo, Texas; seven grandchildren, Tanner Self and wife Allison, Shantell Williams and husband Colby, Tucker Self and wife Thelma, Jennell Rogers, Macie Rogers, Scott Hawkins, and Stephanie Crabtree; six great grandchildren, Braden Self, Emery Self, Cainen Williams, Dalton Self, Rylan Self, and Karsyn Self; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Inez Cox, husband Charles Self, and nephew Brandon Cox.
