Donald J. Wright, 87 of Dimmitt, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021. Celebration of Donald’s life will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Dimmitt with his son, the Rev. Jim Wright, and the Reverends T.C. Broom and Rusty Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow in Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Dimmitt under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home. Family will receive friends at their residence and a public visitation at Colonial Funeral Home on Friday from 5-7 p.m.

Donald Jean Wright born Jan. 26, 1934, to Dewey and Ola Wright in Dimmitt, Texas. He graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1952 where he ran track and played football and basketball. Donald and his teammates were regional finalists in football, state champions in basketball, and state champions of the mile relay in track.

He married the love of his life, Katy Ola Coke on August 24, 1954, in Dimmitt where they resided 6 miles east on the family farm for 60 years. Together, God blessed them with three children, two sons and a daughter, eight grandchildren, 14 greatgrandchildren, and three stepgrandchildren.

He served faithfully and was an active member of First United Methodist Church, the Men’s Prayer Group, and the Asbury Sunday school class since 1957. He was actively involved in organizations and boards both locally and at the district level, to include serving on the board of Deaf Smith Rural Electric Coop for 39 years.

Donald was a proud farmer for almost 70 years and a coowner in North Gin. He was an avid sports fan, supporting the Dimmitt Bobcats and Bobbies, Texas A&M Aggies, and New York Yankees. He has been a true Christian example to his family, church, and community and will be missed greatly.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Katy; his parents; his siblings; a daughter-in-law, Danice Wright; and two great-granddaughters, Tatum Schulte and Hunsley Strickland.

He is survived by his children, Rick Wright and wife Joyce of Dimmitt, Jim Wright and wife Kay of Throckmorton, and Sherri Prater and husband Bryan of Amarillo; grandchildren, Shawna and Travis Schulte, Wesley and Aven Wright, Matthew Wright, Sharla and Josh Strickland, Cliff and Rachel Wright, Adam and Bayli Wright, Shayla and Josh King, Jinna and Jered Hodgkins; great-grandchildren, Shaylin Schulte, Ella and Jackson Wright, Breklyn Strickland, Audrey, Madeleine and Lincoln Wright, Palmer Wright, Tate and Slayde King, and Shelbee and Brylee Hodgkins; stepgrandchildren, Heather Heartley, Justin Speck, and Avery Prater.
