Playoff season is always one of high anticipation and high hopes for high school athletes, coaches and parents.

This year, even with the challenges of COVID-19, the show had to go on and the regular season finally ended with the top teams heading into an unusual playoff season without the tradition Regional tournament so many looked forward to.

But never let it be said the schools in Castro County could be held down, as they went to live streaming so many who were/are unable to attend got to see the game. Thumbs up to the schools.

And it isn’t over yet, with the Swiftettes still in the basketball playoffs again and taking each step needed to get to state. It takes a lot of effort and support – and just plain hard work.

The Swifts and Coach Taylor Schulte had a strong season and made it to the Regional Semi-finals. Great job.

Also, well to the Dimmitt Bobcats who had a great season under Coach Colby Rives, pushing their way to win Bi-District and Area before getting knocked out in the Regional Quarterfinals. A good showing – well done. We expect to see great things in the future.

Meanwhile, the Dimmitt Powerlifting girls’ team is headed for Regionals in Kermit with nine lifters who qualified. Something we have all come to expect since the program began only a few years ago. We’ve got the power!

Many people would agree that their years in high school were some of the best years of their lives — particularly those individuals who were members of a sports team or partic ipated in other activities such as the marching band or debate team.

In many cases, team members become lifelong friends. Reunion parties are held from time to time as teammates return to remember the fun — more so than the outcome of games or events—they had participating in high school activities.

And as the calendar turns to spring, there is nothing like the excitement of high school playoffs and meets across Texas.

While each team will be trying to advance to the state championship, the outcome of the games is only a part of the experience for those individuals in attendance.

Why? Because the people in the stands and those cheering from home are moms and dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles, sisters and brothers, neighbors down the street, fellow students, and longtime residents of the community. People in the stands know the players on the field. Win or lose, their support and love is always there.

For those lucky enough to attend the games, remember that the players, coaches and game officials deserve your utmost support, encouragement and respect. While advancing in the playoffs is the desire of each team, the ultimate objective of high school sports and activities is to have fun and enjoy these special years.

We urge you to continue to support high school athletics and other school competitions in your community.
