GOP voters outpace Democrats in state primary

The Texas primary election saw a decline in voter turnout, with about 3.2 million Texans voting - voting - down from 4.1 million in 2020.

On the GOP side, about 3.2 million Texans cast a ballot, far outpacing their Democratic counterparts, according to the Secretary of State office.

Voters across all 254 Texas counties chose Democratic and Republican nominees for the presidential election, as well as picking nominees for representatives in Congress and the Texas Legislature, along with lower-level judges and county offices in the Super Tuesday primary election.

Texas has 38 congressional seats, and all are up for election this year, with most incumbents running again. There are three open seats and Republicans are vying to replace U.S. Rep. Kay Granger in District 12 and U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess in District 26, both of whom are not seeking reelection.

Candidates facing a runoff election on May 28 include the controversial Republican Speaker of the House Dade Phelan in District 12, challenged by David Covey.

In the GOP presidential race, predictably, Donald Trump came in with 77.9% of the vote and 141 delegates. The closest contender, Nikki Haley picked up 17.4% of the vote.

Democrat President Joe Biden picked up 202 delegates with 84.6% of his parties voters.

In the U.S. Senate race, Republican incumbent Ted Cruz won with 88.3%. Democrat Colin Allred won that party with 58%, prevailing over state Sen. Roland Gutierrez who was also vying for the nomination. Allred will face Cruz in the November election.

Republican U.S. House District 19 candidate and incumbent Jodey Arrington, US House District 19, garnered 83.4% of the vote. There were no Democrats on the primary ballot.

Texas House District 88 incumbent Ken King (R) won his spot on the November ballot, beating his challenger, Karen Post, with 77.6% of the vote. There were no Democrats running.

In the race for State Board of Education District 15, Aaron Kinsey (R) and Morgan Kirkpatrick (D) each were unchallenged on their party ballots.

The Railroad Commissioner race saw Republican Christi Craddick coming through with 50.5% of the vote against three other challengers. Democrat Katherine Culbert came out on top with 67.7% against Bill Burch.
