Eight people died Wednesday when the driver of a car suspected of carrying illegal immigrants tried to outrun deputies from the Zavala County’s Sheriff’s Office.

The accident happened on a South Texas highway near Batesville, about 80 miles southwest of San Antonio.

The crash happened when the driver of a 2009 Honda Civic tried to avoid being stopped by law enforcement and attempted to pass a semi-truck, according to a DPS report, colliding with a 2015 Chevy Equinox, which caught fire.

Both drivers and five passengers were killed. Some of the passengers were reported to be from Honduras, according to a statement by Christopher Olivarez, DPS spokesman. The two people in the Equinox were from Georgia.

It was unclear how fast the vehicles were going, but photos provided by law enforcement show both were mangled and most of the Equinox was burned.
