October 2022 has arrived, marking the beginning of my 11th year here at Rhoads Memorial Library. I cannot believe that it has been 10 years since I became director of this City- and County-funded facility. Here's hoping for many more years of service!

According to the Texas State Library, our library's accreditation has been renewed for the state's fiscal year spanning Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, 2023. Information we provided on our annual report to the state secured this designation, which permits us to participate in interlibrary loans and continuing education, among other perks.

Accreditation allows us to offer various electronic databases through TexShare, a consortium of 672 Texas libraries. This means a local library card provides access not only to the 25,000+ items in our building, but to over 27,000 journals, 171,000 eBooks, over 15 million images, videos, and interactive resources, all courtesy of TexShare Databases.

Topics include health and medicine, environmental science, biographies, arts and literature, current events, business and careers, geography and culture, history and social sciences, science and math, grades K-12 resources, genealogy, automotive and small engine repair, do-ityourself and hobbies, high school equivalency and college admission preparation.

October's Displayer of the Month is Pat Reily, my husband, who is exhibiting his collection of Native American Kachina Dolls. The hand-carved, painted Hopi and Navajo-inspired wooden figurines were made by his maternal grandfather, Robert H. Ross, who was half-Cherokee. Reily and Ross are related to John Ross, chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828-1866.

Just a reminder that the Wednesday, Oct. 12, meeting of Dimmitt Book Club will be held in our meeting room beginning at 2 p.m. Guest speaker Steve Horrell of Hereford will highlight his book, '75 years at Deaf Smith Electric Cooperative.' The public is cordially invited to the free event.

Thursday, Oct. 13, will feature a meeting of the Diabetes Support Group. Also free to the public, the event will be held in our meeting room from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. and will be led by Courtney Lowe, Health Agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include: -'Fairy Tale' (a novel) by Stephen King; -'Blowback' (a thriller) by James Patterson and Brendan DuBois; and -'Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe' (a novel) by Jenny Colgan.

Until next week, Happy Reading!
