Classes teaching English as a second language (ESL) began here at Rhoads Memorial Library on Oct. 6, and will continue each Thursday from 7-9 p.m. There is a possibility for the class to be expanded to Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m.; call leader Gloria Hernandez at 806-240-7611 for details.

October's meeting of the Diabetes Support Group meets today, Oct. 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in our meeting room. Courtney Lowe, Health Agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, will lead the session, which is free and open to the public.

Young Scientists' take-andmake kits for October are here and cover the topic, 'Straw Rockets.' The kits are creations of Felice Acker, local agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Hurry, because supplies are rapidly dwindling.

Visitors have been pleasantly surprised to see new artwork throughout the library, given to us in memory of one of our favorite patrons, Astrid Perez. She taught at Dimmitt High School as a Spanish teacher from 2005-2019. Her husband, Robert, and their sons, Pablo and Luis, donated the artwork. We appreciate their generosity.

Newly released books continue to arrive in large quantities since warehouse delivery problems have smoothed out. Among those ready for checkout are: -'Mad Honey' (a novel) by Jodi Picoult & Jennifer Finney Boylan; -'Dreamland' (a novel) by Nicholas Sparks; -'Falling Stars' (a novel) by Fern Michaels; -'Treasure State' (a Cassie Dewell novel) by C.J. Box; -'Endless Summer' (a ninestory collection) by Elin Hilderbrand.

'The Book Haters' Book Club' by Gretchen Anthony is a newly-released novel that explores the idea that all it takes is the right book to turn a Book Hater into a Book Lover. At least that is what Elliot, the beloved co-owner of Over the Rainbow Bookshop believed before his untimely passing.

But when co-owner Irma decides to sell the cozy bookstore to condo developers, her daughters and Elliot's partner, Thom, conspire to save the store-- by snooping, gossip, and minor sabotage. This read is filled with humor and actual reading recommendations.

Another new release is Ronald H. Balson's 'An Affair of Spies.' Winner of the National Jewish Book Award, the work tells of Nathan Silverman, who had an idyllic childhood in 1920's Berlin, then saw increasing bigotry against his family and the rest of the Jewish community. He flees to New York City after his uncle is arrested on Kristallnacht.

Upon joining the U.S. military, Nathan is trained as a spy and tasked with smuggling a defector out of Germany via France in an effort to prevent the Nazis from creating an atomic bomb. Dr. Allison Fisher of the University of Chicago, who can speak French and is an expert in nuclear physics, joins him in his quest.

They fall in love with one another and wonder: will they be able to escape Europe safely with the defector and start a new life together or will they fail and become casualties of war?

Until next week, Happy Reading!
