A wintery, snowy decor has replaced Christmas decorations here at Rhoads Memorial Library. So, for the few people who will admonish us for leaving Christmas items out too long (and they will), prepare yourself to hear me say, "These are not Christmas decorations. They are snow people and snow-covered holly celebrating the winter season."

In other news about our facility: now our male patrons can rejoice as they have a new toilet in their restroom. It became necessary to upgrade the 25-year-old porcelain potty when it began leaking and the gush of flushing water would not stop.

Some men have been so dazzled by the new privy that they have commented on its beauty. They can claim bragging rights for having a newer toilet than the ladies, whose loo was replaced last July. (Yea! new toilets and now, a new year? Can life get any better than this?)

Speaking of a new year, I read a quote that seems more appropriate now than ever: "Many Americans no longer celebrate the arrival of the New Year--they celebrate the survival of the old year." Almost everyone I've talked to expresses the idea that "surely 2021 will be a better year!" As I often say in agreement, "from your lips to God's ears."

For your reading pleasure, one newly released book that has arrived and is ready for checkout is "Hush, Hush" (a Stone Barrington novel) by Stuart Woods. Amazingly, this is the 56th book of this popular series.

Author Teddy Jones, a Friona resident, has a new novel out titled "Slanted Light". Readers may remember Jones' first novel, "Jackson's Pond, Texas", which began the saga of the Jackson family. "Slanted Light" continues their tale, as Claire Havlicek, a descendant of the Jacksons, collapses under the weight of life's turmoil. Her marriage is threatened, a forced buyout of her two clinics looms, drought imperils their ranch and cattle business, and issues arise with their teenage daughter.

When Claire acknowledges her limits, Willa Jackson, her grandmother, and other family members show her that being human, weaknesses and all, can be the source of strength and joy. "Jackson's Pond, Texas" and "Slanted Light" are both available for checkout.

Until next week, stay safe and Happy Reading!
