Regional universities are associated with the places in Texas that produce the food, fuel and fiber that nourish, power and clothe our state and nation. They frequently serve rural populations and help the people of these regions attain their aspirations. In Texas, about half of all college graduates come from regional institutions.

Most families look forward to a trip because they can (1) visit someplace new, (2) swim in pools where catfish once lived, and (3) search out motels that appeared in horror films. In a casual survey (at the mall) we discovered a father’s primary travel goal is to “see how many miles we can get behind us before nightfall.” Each day he attempts a new distance record, and he resents tourist attractions that may limit his progress.

While it is impossible to catalog all of the expectations that any university has for applicants, there are some general considerations that all students should consider if college is in their future. Institutions vary widely and knowing the type of institution a student is considering is important.

Distinctive college preparation

The nature of university students is changing. According to the Education Data Initiative, nearly 16 million undergraduate students are enrolled in college as of 2020. That represents a 4.3% decline over the previous year. Over 60% of the students are enrolled full-time. About 63% of the high school graduates go on to post-secondary study.

Abbott signs two education reform bills

Last Wednesday, Governor Greg Abbott signed several education reform bills including Senate Bill 17 and Senate Bill 18, that will alter some policies at colleges and universities. Under SB 17, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) offices at state colleges and universities will be closing in January 2024 and activities that seek to promote certain groups of individuals over others based on race, ethnicity and gender will also come to an end.

Abbott signs animal welfare bills

On June 18, four historic animal welfare bills passed into law. During this legislative session, the Texas Humane Legislation Network (THLN) pushed for all four bills: SB 876, HB 4164, HB 3660, and HB 598.
