The UIL 3A Region 1 Cross Country Meet was held at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock on Tuesday’s chilly morning, with Dimmitt High School teams competing among more than 24-30 schools from the region for a chance to advance to state competition.

The Dimmitt varsity XC boys team placed eighth overall, behind Holliday, Presidio, Tuscola Jim Ned, Lubbock Roosevelt, Dalhart, Tornillo and Crane. There were 170 runners in the 5,000-meter race.

DHS senior Azariah Gonzalez came in with solid performance, placing fourth in the huge field with 16:23.0. The top time came in from a Holliday freshman, Noah Strohman, at 15:42.8.

The DHS varsity XC girls had a team placing of 13th, behind Holliday, Dalhart, Tuscola, Canadian, Compass Academy, Ballinger, Shallowater, Llano, Brock, Crane, Muleshoe and Idalou. There were 189 runners in the 2-mile race.

Top runner for Dimmitt were freshman Zoraya Ontiveros, who can in at 53rd, and freshman Frida Madrigal, at 56th. The top time for the 3A girls was earned by Holliday senior Jaycee Lyons with 12:20.7.

The state competition is set of Nov. 4-5 in Round Rock at Old Settler’s Park. The 3A boys who advanced are scheduled to run on Nov. 5 at 9 a.m.
