806 Storm Chasers reported that a hailstone that fell east of Tulia has officially set a new state record. Measuring at 7.25 inches in diameter, storm chasers Val and Amy Castor documented the hailstone 3 miles WNW of Vigo Park, Texas at 7:37 p.m. on June 2, shattering the previous record of 6.4 inches in Hondo, Texas in 2021.

The Olen Schulte Memorial Team Roping & Wild West Show was a big success this past weekend with lots of competition, fun and presentation of scholarships. There was $12k in payouts and added money and almost 150 contestants, not including Friday’s team roping.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar today said state sales tax revenue totaled $4.01 billion in May, 4.5 percent more than in May 2023. The majority of May sales tax revenue is based on sales made in April and remitted to the agency in May.

Hernandez earns jailer certification

Castro County Jailer Louis Michael Hernandez recently attended the Randall County Sheriff’s Office Basic Jailer Academy in Amarillo and completed 136 hours of training.He started on May 6 and completed 136 hours of training and was also named the Valedictorian of the class, with a GPA of 95.25.

Benjamin Elmore announced his intention to run as a write-in candidate for the office of Castro County Sheriff.As a licensed Texas Peace Officer with over 12 years of emergency services experience, Elmore said he has the experience necessary to serve and protect the citizens of Castro County.

Steer, heifer validation dates set

Castro County 4-H and FFA steer and heifer validation dates have been set for the upcoming 2024 show season.In Dimmitt, on June 11, youth may come to Dimmitt Ag Farm between 8:30 and 10 a.m., or in Nazareth on June 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Kleman’s Barn.
