Jobless rates up in 12 states

In November, unemployment rates were higher in 12 states and stable in 38 states and the District of Columbia, according to statistics from two monthly programs. The U.S. unemployment rate is 3.7 percent.

People around the world will be celebrating the arrival of 2024 this weekend. Americans have a varied array of traditions from exchanging gifts, making resolutions, attending parties, fireworks and eating good food.
Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera offered a big “Thanks” to everyone and all the organizations that donated to the Annual Toy Drive, including Dollar Store who made a generous contribution of toys. Rivera thanked the deputies and communications dispatchers Brittanny Llamas and Mischa Baldwin for helping organize the drive, and the deputies and jailer Brennon Garcia and Santa for backing them up to deliver presents.

The Dimmitt Bobbies suffered a narrow defeat by the Brownfield Lady Cubs, 43-40. Brownfield took the lead in the first quarter, 21-13, but both teams scored evenly in the second quarter, closing the first half out with a Lady Cubs lead 32-24.

The West Texas A&M University marching band has advanced to the finals of metal band Metallica’s “For Whom the Band Tolls” contest. Bands from around the country are competing to win musical instruments for their programs, furnished by Metallica and its sponsors.

The Nazareth Swifts claimed a big victory over the Amarillo Flames, 75-36. The Swifts took charge in the first quarter, gaining a 21-9 lead and continued to out-shoot the Flames in the second quarter closing the first half ahead 37-20.

Casto County 4-H Spencer Acker had gingerbread fun with the Nazareth Pre-K. Students were treated with the story of the Gingerbread Cowboy, decorated gingerbread cardboard cutouts, and did a science experiment with baking soda, gingerbread spices and cookie cutters.
