TAJF awarded $20M to provide housing legal services

The Texas Access to Justice Foundation (TAJF), the state’s largest funding source for civil legal aid, today announced it received an additional $20 million in funding from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to continue the Emergency Rental Assistance Program.

Three charged with endangering a child

Katherine Carrillo, 20, Muhannad Abdel-Raouf, 21, and Almazen Abdel-Raouf, 22, have been charged by a Lubbock grand jury with endangering a child. A trial date has not yet been set.

New mule deer restrictions added

Hunters pursuing mule deer this fall in the Texas Panhandle should be aware that an antler restriction has been expanded to 21 from the original seven counties of Briscoe, Childress, Cottle, Floyd, Hall, Motley and Lynn counties.

South Plains Fair implements new policies

The South Plains Fair gets underway this weekend with two new features - a clear bag policy, and beer sales. According to General Manager Jennifer Wallace, big events are implementing similar policies. Third-party vendors will run a few stations on the fairgrounds.

Tri-State Fair shooting being investigated

A gunman shot three people Monday night at the Tri-State Fair & Rodeo before being shot and wounded by sheriff’s deputies, according to authorities.

State unemployment rate 4.2%

In August 2022, Texas added a total of 16,400 nonfarm jobs. For the 10th consecutive month, the state set new employment highs as total nonfarm employment reached 13,530,100. Texas has added a total of 726,900 positions since August 2021. The Texas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.

Scott encourages voter education

On National Voter Registration Day, Texas Secretary of State John Scott held a press conference at the Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center in East Austin to highlight the office's “VoteReady” voter education campaign.

Swifts defeat Tigers, 71-58

The Nazareth Swifts beat the Groom Tigers in a highscoring game this past Friday, 71-58. In the first quarter, Groom put points on the board with a 66-yard return, to take the lead, 6-0. Nazareth answered with a Luke Schulte 44-yard rush and touchdown to tie the score, 6-6.
