Grand jury hands down indictments

The 242nd District Court grand jury handed down 16 indictments on July 7. Pricilla Rodriguez, 37, and Ronald Lucero, 39, both of Dimmitt were indicted for possession of a controlled substance PG1 over 4 grams and under 200 grams, which is a 2nd degree felony Francisco Hernandez Chavez, 39 of Hereford, was indicted for assault on a family member violence and impeding breath/circulation, which is a 3rd degree felony.

Capt. Ewing - 30 years of service

Castro County Sheriff’s Office Captain Mary F. Ewing reached a milestone in her career last Wednesday, and was joined by Sheriff Sal Rivera, Sheriff’s deputies, and jail staff to celebrate 30 years of service as a jailer and jail administrator. Ewing began as a jailer in 1992 under Sheriff C.D. Fitzgerald and was appointed jail administrator in 1995 by Fitzgerald which she continued to do under Sheriff Rivera. The Sheriff’s Office presented her with a service plaque and 30-year pin at a celebration at the Castro County Law Enforcement Center on July 6.

DISD approves substitute teacher pay scale

The Dimmitt Independent School District board of trustees met on Monday and, following an executive session, approved the DISD substitute pay scale. Certified teacher substitutes with no college degree will receive $75 per day; with a college degree, $95 per day; and a certified teacher will receive $115 per day.

Wildfire threat continues in region

The threat for large, fastmoving wildfires continues to increase across Texas with very hot and dry weather and worsening drought. There are currently 206 counties in Texas with burn bans, including Castro and surrounding counties.

USDA issues $557.5M in Relief Program payments

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced, agricultural producers nationwide have already received more than $4 billion through the Emergency Relief Program (ERP), representing nearly 67% of the more than $6 billion projected to be paid through this phase of the program. Eligible producers in Texas have received $557.5 million in funding to date. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) mailed out prefilled applications in late May to producers with crop insurance who suffered losses due to natural disasters in 2020 and 2021. Commodity and specialty crop producers have until July 22 to complete applications.
