USDA accepts more than 3.1M acres in Grassland CRP Signup

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is accepting offers for more than 3.1 million acres from agricultural producers and private landowners through this year’s Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Grassland Signup, the highest in history. The signup’s results include more than 246,000 acres in Texas. This program allows producers and landowners to continue grazing and haying practices while protecting grasslands and promoting plant and animal biodiversity and conservation, and it’s part of the Biden-Harris administration’s broader effort to address climate change and to conserve natural resources.

Bryce Allen Parker, 33 of Lubbock, was arrested by the Sheriff’s Office for Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 2 over 1 gram-under 4 grams and Possession of Marijuana under 2 ounces.

Abbott signs EO on return of illegals

Governor Greg Abbott last Thursday issued an executive order authorizing and empowering the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety to apprehend illegal immigrants who cross the border between ports of entry and return them to the border.

Students attend WTAMU Upward Bound banquet

Several Dimmitt High School students attended the WTAMU Upward Bound banquet on July 8 in Canyon. Heidi Cantu was named Outstanding Student in English, and Martin Rodriguez, Outstanding Student in French. Jazmine Lopez from Tulia was Outstanding Student in Math, and Juan Joven, the Outstanding Student in Science. Upward Bound is a free federally funded program that inspires, motivates, and provides development of fundamental skills, academic enrichment experiences, and exploratory opportunities for student participants to be successful in their admissions process, educational persistence, and completion of a postsecondary education program.

Koenig retires from DSEC

After 44 years of service to Deaf Smith Electric Cooperative, manager of Engineering Services Jerry Koenig has announced his retirement. “I don’t have any grandiose plans – just do some traveling to see family and work on the family farm some,” Koenig said.

Sales tax revenue up in county

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar distributed $1.3 billion in sales tax revenue to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts in July, 15.3 percent higher than in July 2021. Locally, Castro County received $21,815, up by 34.88 percent from last year in the same period.

Grand jury hands down indictments

The 242nd District Court grand jury handed down 16 indictments on July 7. Pricilla Rodriguez, 37, and Ronald Lucero, 39, both of Dimmitt were indicted for possession of a controlled substance PG1 over 4 grams and under 200 grams, which is a 2nd degree felony Francisco Hernandez Chavez, 39 of Hereford, was indicted for assault on a family member violence and impeding breath/circulation, which is a 3rd degree felony.
