Castro County News recognized by WTAMU

The Castro Country News received a Certificate of Recognition from West Texas State University A&M this week. The certificate is for “Outreach Excellence Newspaper” and was given to Castro County News as a Top Five Newspaper in service to the region for publishing student and community achievements, playing a pivotal role in building a quality place to live and study, as detailed in WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.

Abbott launches grants for border security

Governor Greg Abbott Monday announced the availability of $100 million in grant funding through the Operation Lone Star (OLS) Grant Program to enhance interagency border security operations supporting OLS, including the facilitation of directed actions to deter and interdict criminal activity and detain non-citizens arrested for state crimes related to the border crisis.

Unemployment drops in several states

Unemployment rates were lower in August in 15 states and the District of Columbia and stable in 35 states, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Texas was among the three states having the largest job increases at +681,000.

HPWD adopts ad valorem tax rate

During their Sept. 14 meeting, the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District (HPWD) Board of Directors approved a resolution setting the 2021 ad valorem tax rate at $0.0051 per $100 valuation for operation and maintenance of the district.

Castro County youth compete at Tri-State

Exhibitors from Castro County 4-H, Nazareth and Dimmitt FFAs have been busy showing their livestock at the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo. Castro County 4-H juniors and seniors competed in the Livestock Judging Contest.
