Our annual summer reading program for youngsters has begun here at Rhoads Memorial Library and books are flying out of here as fast as we can check them out. If anyone missed the two-day registration last week, do not fear, we are still accepting signupsby those who want to participate.

Passover Festival

Our daughter April was only 3 when we entered her in the Farmerville Little Miss Watermelon Festival contest. Naturally, we proudly clapped as she walked out on the runway stage. It was over 50 years ago and yet I still picture her wearing a watermeloncolored dress made by her Grandmother Davis.

High prices cited as fewer plan vacations

As the summer months approached, Bankrate conducted a survey on how many Americans were planning a vacation and saw the numbers way down from the previous year.According to the survey, around 46% polled said they were planning a vacation –down from 53% in 2024.

Bill passes to restrict college campus protests

College campus’ protests in Texas could meet with some restrictions following approval of Senate Bill 2972, giving university systems’ governing boards the power to limit where they can take place.The Senate passed the legislation 21-10 on May 14, and now heads to Gov. Greg Abbott to sign into law.

Property tax relief now up to voters

Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker Dustin Burrows praised the passage of SB 4, SB 23, HB 9, SJR 2, SJR 85, and HJR 1, which if approved by Texas voters in November, will deliver property tax relief to home and business owners.
