With Thanksgiving upon us, we acknowledge the importance of families and friends as we share a feast, memories, and activities on the holidays. Even as there are days or weeks designated to honor those in the community and across the nation, I we should give thanks for ALL our volunteers who are ingrained in many parts of our lives.

What is the bell-shaped curve?

There’s increasing emphasis for both private and public sectors to focus on higher-scoring people in certain skills. This clearly eliminates 50% of the population, who fall on the left side of the “bell-shaped curve.”

Illegal immigrants killed in high speed chase

Eight people died Wednesday when the driver of a car suspected of carrying illegal immigrants tried to outrun deputies from the Zavala County’s Sheriff’s Office. The accident happened on a South Texas highway near Batesville, about 80 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Remember back to past holiday dinners, one comes to mind when we were in the Air Force and stationed in New Jersey. My husband had several bachelor friends who were regularly invited over for dinner, and they decided to return our generosity by inviting us to a holiday dinner.

Football’s most important player

What’s the most important position on a football team? I vote for the center. Some pay more attention to the quarterback or running backs, but without the center they’d just be standing around.

Really ancient food

Sometimes I wonder how our ancient ancestors survived without foods like breakfast cereal and ice cream. But maybe they didn’t realize what they were missing, because prehistoric television commercials got such poor reception.

Veterans Day and the University

Veterans Day has a long and storied history, beginning in the U.S. in recognition of the conclusion of World War I. “The Great War” formally ended on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. However, fighting had actually ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month—November 11, 1918.
