Our daughter April was only 3 when we entered her in the Farmerville Little Miss Watermelon Festival contest. Naturally, we proudly clapped as she walked out on the runway stage. It was over 50 years ago and yet I still picture her wearing a watermeloncolored dress made by her Grandmother Davis.

Bill passes to restrict college campus protests

College campus’ protests in Texas could meet with some restrictions following approval of Senate Bill 2972, giving university systems’ governing boards the power to limit where they can take place.The Senate passed the legislation 21-10 on May 14, and now heads to Gov. Greg Abbott to sign into law.

Property tax relief now up to voters

Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker Dustin Burrows praised the passage of SB 4, SB 23, HB 9, SJR 2, SJR 85, and HJR 1, which if approved by Texas voters in November, will deliver property tax relief to home and business owners.

This past Monday was the last day of the regular Texas Legislative session and with it, will come changes that impact public schools, property tax relief, criminal justice, abortion and other issues.

Squatters Bill pass both chambers

The Squatters Bill, SB 38 authored by Sen. Paul Bettencourt, and sponsored by Rep. Angie Chen Button in the House, passed both chambers of the Texas Legislature, and will now head to the governor’s desk to be signed.The Senate voted and the House, 23-8 and the House, 85-44.

Dimmitt High School has hired Coach Kyle Carroll as the new head boys basketball coach. Coming from Brownfield High School where he was the assistant basketball coach, he is in his 8th year of coaching. He graduated from Westwood High School and attended East Texas Baptist University.
