AC begins Private Pilot Ground class

Amarillo College begins its first Private Pilot Ground class this semester for people looking to become pilots this spring. The continuing education class will focus on topics like principles of flight, radio procedures, weather navigation, aerodynamics and FAA regulations.

Texas primary election edges closer

Texas will hold its 2024 primary elections on Super Tuesday, March 5. It will be among the 15 states and one territory that selects more than a third of all delegates. The last day to register to vote in the primary election is Feb. 5. Early voting begins Feb. 20.

Baby Shower held for Crofts

A shower was held for Caitlin Smith Crofts and baby boy on Dec. 30, 2023, in the home of Lynn Sides. Special guests included grandmothers, Cindy Bradley and Kathy Lust; sisters, Jesslyn Smith and Maddie Smith; and aunts, Maggi Lytle and Tiffany Nino.

Fort Worth gas explosion injures 20

At least 20 people were injured at a Fort Worth hotel as a result of what is being called a natural gas explosion on Monday. According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, the first call came in at 3:32 p.m., followed by multiple calls reporting a “type of explosion” at the Sandman Hotel.

Texas named 2023 State of the Year

Governor Greg Abbott today announced Texas has been named 2023 State of the Year by Business Facilities magazine in recognition of the state’s best-in-the-nation business climate, economic development leadership, and a “blockbuster 2023 for capital investment and job creation.

Congressional border battle ramping up in Capitol

A congressional political fight is ramping up for 2024 over immigration policies and securing the border. During a visit to the Texas- Mexico border Republicans demanded the final text include changes to the country’s asylum laws and renewed construction of the border wall.
Just past North Gin on U.S. Hwy 385 N, the Dimmitt Volunteer Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office, Dimmitt Police Department and other first responders were met with “white out” challenges and treacherous roads this past Monday when a winter storm brought in snow and high winds creating blizzard conditions which caused numerous vehicle collisions and stranded motorists.

Winter storm wreaks havoc

A severe winter storm hit the Texas Panhandle area, including Castro County, on Monday making for very hazardous conditions with snow and high winds gusting to 60 and 70 mph, and causing multiple vehicle accidents throughout the county and stranding drivers.
The Texas Six-Man Coaches Association (TSMCA) has named Nazareth Swifts Zane Schulte, freshman, the All-State Newcomer of the Year for the 2023 TSMCA Football All-State Division 1 1st Team. Schulte also earned the same designation for All-District and All-Regional.
