Texas teachers continue to be arrested for sex crimes in alarming numbers, and in 2023, that number exploded. According to Texas Scorecard, at least 100 Texas teachers made headlines for everything from sexually abusing students to creating child pornography.

Texas wildfire events down in 2023

New data from the Texas A&M Forest Service show that in 2023, Texas firefighters responded to 6,534 wildfi res, a little more than half the previous year. The 2023 wildfires burned 204,441 acres across the state, compared with more than 645,000 in 2022.

During 2023, 15 Texans broke/set new world records in some unusual activities, according to Guiness World Records. Farthest basketball shot made backwards - On Jan. 29, Jeremy Ware, in San Antonio, accomplished the farthest basketball shot made backwards at 85 feet 5 inches.

HPWD begins water level measurements

High Plains Underground Water Conservation District No. 1 (HPWD) staff members began annual water level measurements on Jan. 2, beginning with Castro, Deaf Smith and Parmer counties. These annual observations are one of the most essential services HPWD provides.

With January comes the annual Nazareth Stock Show and Castro County Livestock Show which will kick off on Wednesday, Jan. 10 and run through Jan. 13. Nazareth FFA and 4-H youth will be exhibiting livestock at the Naz show on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.
