The Castro County 4-H Educational Presentations competitors did very well in the Share the Fun competition, with several headed for state. The District 4-H contest was held virtually this year; individuals had to record their performances and upload them.

City implements mass notification

The City of Dimmitt has partnered with CivicReady to implement its mass notification solution. According to Dimmitt City Manager Daniel Jackson, the system is available from Civic-Plus, a leader in integrated technology for local govern ment, the CivicReady solution will allow Dimmitt to issue urgent notifications, emergency instructions, warnings, and routine communications to subscribed citizens via email, text message, and voicemail alert, to keep citizens safe and informed.

Naz Robotics headed for state competition

The Nazareth Robotics teams won Regionals this past weekend and are bound for the state competition. Nazareth beat 36 teams from Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland and El Paso, 1A to 6A, at the Regional meet held at Lubbock High School this past weekend.

Nazareth Robotics #16617 veterans moved through the qualifying rounds, the semifinals and on to the final matches to win the Regional Alliance Captain and the Control Award. The Naz veteran team selected Denver City #15546 and Naz #18570 as alliance partners in the finals with winning results.

Oliver Meador earns trap championship

Castro County 4-H Oliver Meador is the 2022 San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo Junior Shoot Out American Trap Champion in the Boys Age Division II. Meador also made the finals for Open Boys Age Division II. The contest had one of the largest turnouts on record, with around 1,057 shooters. A proficient shooter, he had a two-bird lead going into the finals and made every shot count to keep his lead and earn Champion in American Trap. Harrison Meador shot a 95/100 and was one bird away from shoot offs for the top three spots in FFA for scholarships and one bird away from shoot offs for Open Boys Age Division I.

Wildfire danger increases in Panhandle, South Plains

The National Weather Service issued a ‘Critical Fire Danger” and “Red Flag Warning on Monday for the South Plains and southwestern Texas Panhandle along with a wind advisory. Castro County Emergency Management Director, Sheriff Sal Rivera, urged residents of the county to remember they are under a countywide burn ban and to report a fire immediately by calling 911 and giving the location.

Dairy MAX scholarship applications now open

Dairy MAX is committed to strengthening agriculture and sustaining a viable future for dairy farming and will be continuing its scholarship program which supports local dairy farm families. Three $2,500 academic scholarships will be awarded this spring.
