The Dimmitt Middle School Beginner Band

The Dimmitt Middle School Beginner Band, under the direction of MaryAnn Spurlock and John Zalman, received a First Division rating at the Bushland Band Festival this past Saturday. The First Division is the highest rating a band can receive. There were 14 bands participating in the event.

TTU Adams signs extension on contract

After leading the Red Raider men’s basketball team to the NCAA Sweet 16 and a 27-10 overall record during his first year leading the program, Head Coach Mark Adams has signed a contract extension through the 2026-27 season.

Corrales, Schacher applications advance to state

Nazareth High School seniors Makenzy Corrales and Dayson Schacher were among the top 25 scholarship applicants who will have their applications advance to state. The Texas FFA will award more than 140 scholarships to outstanding graduating seniors through its academic scholarship program. These scholarships are awarded based on academic and FFA achievements as well as the member's performance in an interview process. Students must score a minimum of 1000 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT to be eligible to apply. State Interviews will be held on June 6 in Stephenville at Tarleton State University.

Naz Robotics

The Nazareth Robotics traveled to Houston and competed in the World Division, and ended the season ranked 13th in the World and in the top .4 percent. They were also one of the smallest teams at the competition. The team had 46 wins and six losses in a season that began on Nov. 6, 2021. Tagan Ramsey, Adrian Rios and Harrison Meador represented Nazareth at the World competition. Coaching/mentoring the team is Robert O’Connor, principal at Nazareth. In addition to Ramsey, Rios and Meador, members of the team include Tell Bagley, Chloe Birkenfeld, Tanner Birkenfeld, Brett Heitschmidt, Luke Schulte and Alejandro Guerrero.

Primary runoff elections approaching

The Republican and Democratic primary run-off races are set for May 24 when the voters in those parties make the final decision in primary races that were left undecided after the March 1 election. Primary races/elections determine which candidate will represent each political party in advance of the general election.

TxDOT to begin project that includes Castro County

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is ready to begin work this week on a $451,442 safety project to install reflective pavement markers (RPMs) to various roads in all the Lubbock District’s 17-county service area: Bailey, Castro, Cochran, Crosby, Dawson, Gaines, Garza, Floyd, Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, Parmer, Swisher, Terry, and Yoakum counties.

‘Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive set for May 14

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its annual national food drive – including in Dimmitt/Castro County - on Saturday, May 14. Postal carriers in Castro County are urging citizens to participate and help their community through this project by leaving their donation of non-perishable food items next to their mailbox before delivery of the mail on May 14.

New Playground Underway

The City of Dimmitt Public Works Department has begun a project to install some playground equipment at Rotary (Ninth Street) Park. This playground equipment was donated by Dimmitt I.S.D. a few years ago. City manager Daniel Jackson said they are excited to see the finished project and grateful to have employees such as Freddie Sepeda and Osiel Ontiveros who work hard and care for their community.
