The Running Water SWCD, in partnership with USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), is hosting the Castro County Local Work Group Meeting. This meeting is an opportunity to bring farmers, ranchers, conservationists, and others together to discuss natural resources and set local conservation priorities.

A fire on U.S. Hwy 60 which was called in last Friday at 1:33 p.m. blazed up and burned a lengthy swath of land along the highway. According to Sheriff Sal Rivera, the cause of the fire is unknown but could be due to sparks from a truck’s brakes or a cigarette thrown out of a car window. The fire extended into Deaf Smith County. Hereford Fire Department responded due to Summerfield being 7 miles the city and one Dimmitt Fire Department Truck responded.
The Ogallala Quilt Festival is set for April 9-10 with lots of classes, lectures and other events to enjoy. Exhibitors and quilters are looking forward to a great festival after last year’s was canceled due to the pandemic and the “Color Remix” theme promises to be the best ever.
The Commissioners Court approved a proclamation designating April as Castro County Child Abuse and Awareness Month. Castro County joined other counties in Texas as it does each year in promoting awareness for a continuing problem and assistance for victim of child abuse. Judge Carroll Gerber presented the proclamation to the Castro County Welfare Board: (left to right) Jennifer Sullivan, board secretary, Dianne Wilhelm, president of board, Judge Carroll Gerber, Joe Josselet, board member, and Melissa Carpenter, board treasurer.
Dimmitt Middle School Robotics teams participated in the Texas Tech GEAR contest on March 12, coming out of the competition with several top honors. ACE elementary students also competed at the event.

Despite tornadoes, blizzard warnings, warm weather, high winds, and chilly rain that we have experienced in the course of the last few days, we have been busy here at Rhoads Memorial Library. Cataloguing, then shelving, new books for checkout has been done along with vigorous spring cleaning not only in the library proper but in our meeting room. As the weather warms up, we can tackle the weeds outside!
